Not bad, but not his best

I've read all of Richard Paul Russo's books and liked them all quite well, especially his previous book, Ship of Fools. I was quite excited to read his latest, The Rosetta Codex, and I enjoyed it, but it struck me as a bit flat compared to his previous work.
In particular, it seemed like the characters were not very well-developed in this one. The main character, even though he is the focus of the book, seemed to be a bit of a cipher, and the rest of the characters never really got developed. It wasn't that they were stereotypes, just that there wasn't any time spent really delving into them. I also would have liked to have seen a bit more time spent exploring the world in which the story is set. It seemed to me that the story went a bit too directly from start to finish, and could have benefitted from a few side-jaunts.
Overall, it wasn't a bad book by any means, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations based on Russo's previous works either.

If you loved this one, I'd recommend his previous works. His first books are a series about a detective in a future San Francisco, all of which are great. After that he wrote Ship of Fools, which is a horrific SF novel. I wouldn't call it horror, exactly, just freaking disturbing.
