Didn't quite groove for me

I've read a lot of Stross's work, and this one was the first to really disappoint me. Basically, I did not like it's mix of wacky satire with serious future speculation. The mix never gelled for me, and I found that the two constantly distracted from each other.

In general, I'm not a fan of this style, though in the past I've enjoyed Rudy Rucker's work, which does a lot of this. I think the key difference with Rucker is that he has a lot more wacky in his novels, so they are basically generally wacky with some serious interesting ideas in the pot.

But Accelerando seemed to be basically serious near(ish)-future speculative SF with bits of wack thrown in for no particular reason, and the wack grated. I liked the book better as it got farther into the future, as in those parts of the book, the weird funny bits made more sense, whereas in the parts closest to the present, the funny bits seemed like bad speculation, as opposed to good humor.

I would recommend this to completists like myself who like to read all of an author's works, and also to folks who really like silly satire, but otherwise I'd say skip it, though I've liked everything else I've read by Stross.
