I saw the movie and then immediately read the book. The long and short of it, the book is better. That's usually true, but in this case I think the problem is that the movie's ending is only sort of coherent, while the book works quite well plot-wise. A bit of a disappointment from Miyazaki, but it got me to read this rather nice book, so it all worked out ok.
