Minus one for D&D

Okay, just kidding, the title is not a D&D reference.
This book is the sequel to "Curse of Chalion", which I read recently-ish. I liked that one better, as it combined both standard fantasy stuff ("break the curse of the gods!") with political intrigue. This one is more of a straight-ahead fantasy novel, and while there are some political bits, they don't play a big role in the plot.
It's well written and interesting, but I was hoping for something a little more complex.
